Your Initial Approach Is Critical
by Mary Jane Mapes

Your initial approach to a presentation can make all the difference! If done well, it will set the stage, get people ready to listen, and reduce potential defensiveness on the part of your audience...something people naturally seem to feel when they know that you are there to "sell" them something.

To maximize the first critical moments with your audience, consider the following:

  • Begin where people are. Tune everything else out while you tune your audience in with your eyes, mind, heart, and soul. If you do this, your content will show a deep understanding of your audience and your eyes and body will communicate a one-on-one presence with the entire audience...one person at a time.
  • Love your audience. Carry with you the mind-set of someone who cares deeply about the well-being of the audience. Genuine caring communicates authenticity. Authenticity generates trust.
  • Share your excitement. Excitement isn't something you "put on." Excitement is something that bubbles up from inside of you, spills over, and floods the audience with the same sense of certainty you feel about your topic. To sell others, we must first be sold ourselves.
  • Steep yourself in knowledge. Depth of knowledge is evidence of credibility; knowledge of your audience is evidenced in hot button benefits to them.
