The Art of Fielding Questions with Finesse

How do you deliver a negative message in a positive way?
Sometimes we cannot avoid being the bearer of bad news. If you have just announced bad news, e.g. budget cuts, plant closings, people are bound to be concerned. When the impact of your message stirs negative emotions in your audience, it is important that you are gentle and compassionate in your approach, and that you show empathy for them. However, it is also important that you remain as positive as possible.
To remain positive, you may wish to try the following:
- Recognize the positive aspects of the action to be taken. Focus on the ultimate good that will come from taking such action.
- Discuss the circumstances which led to the decision.
- Use clear and concise positive statements, leaving open any possible options for the future.
- State both the pro's and con's of the action, always concluding with the pro's which, hopefully, will out-number the con's.
- Show empathy. Show empathy. Show empathy.
